The Baratza Virtuoso coffee grinder is considered by some to be the best mid-range coffee grinder on the market. And for good reason too – it features 40 grind settings, is easy to clean, and comes at a very affordable price tag. In fact, I used the Baratza Virtuoso for a number of years before investing in a high-end grinder.
However, it is important to take a look at some Baratza Virtuoso reviews before buying it so you know exactly what you’re getting. For instance, it is absolutely fantastic for grinding coffee and only ‘good’ at grinding espresso. But if you’re not extraordinarily picky with you espresso (or if you have a cheaper machine) it will work just fine.

My Baratza 585 Virtuoso Coffee Grinder Review
A brief look at the Baratza Virtuoso’s specs reveals that this grinder is situated right in between the low-end and high-end machines. On the plus side, it’s commercial-grade burrs suggest that it can last for years under heavy use. So when you pay $200 bucks for this thing, realize that you’re investing in something that will last you a long time.
What I like the most about this grinder is that it is incredibly versatile for the price. You can experiment with up to 40 grind settings to ensure that you are getting the best grind for whatever coffee you need to make. If you have a decent coffee maker, the Baratza Virtuoso coffee grinder will take the flavor of your coffee to a whole new level – rivaling even the best coffee shops in your area.
Achieving a consistent grind for espresso is quite good with this machine. If you take you’re espresso seriously but don’t have $500+ to invest in a grinder, than this machine will work just fine for your purposes. It does not grind coffee beans too fast, so you don’t have to worry about ruining the quality of your grind.
And talk about clean! Due to the fantastic design of the grind catcher, this machine does not spew any coffee grinds anywhere. This is something to be aware of, as many grinder have the tendency to spill at least some coffee somewhere, which can be rather annoying to clean up.
Another plus with this grinder is that it is very easy to clean. Some cheaper grinders (and even some expensive ones) are notoriously difficult to clean, or come with inadequate cleaning utensils. The supplied hand brush can easily get into any crevice and hand-washing is not overly difficult (do not put any of the parts in the dishwasher).
Finally, Baratza has excellent customer support. Many people don’t realize this, but Baratza continually takes in customer input/complaints about their products and improves them on a yearly basis. Some customers had complained about the Baratza Virtuoso coffee grinder early in its production, and since then most of the problems have been fixed. Today’s Baratza Virtuoso is therefore well-designed and highly durable.
Most owners of the Baratza Virtuoso coffee grinder are very happy with their purchase (especially for coffee) and highlight the great customer service of Baratza. I came across one customer whose burrs began to deteriorate due to a rock jamming in the machine – Baratza replaced the burrs no questions asked!
Some minor quibbles did come up though. Some customers complained that occasionally the beans would get hung up in the feeder, thus preventing them from reaching the burrs (this has happened to me only a handful of times). One person had a problem with the setting knob falling off – mind you this didn’t actually impact the functionality of the machine since the knob just slides right back on.
“After figuring out what settings work best for my three purposes, I am getting a coffee that is as good as I would get in even some of the better local establishments in Portland.” Howard Pierson, Amazon.com
“I have had this grinder for almost 8 years and It just keeps going. Very well designed and manufactured.” Malcolm Reding, Amazon.com
“This is one of the best coffee grinders I have ever owned. For the money it cannot be beat… This grinder offers consistent grinds over and over and over.“ C. Lopez, Amazon.com
