My Rancilio Rocky Doserless Coffee Grinder Review
I have had this grinder for 3 years now, and am still astounded by the high quality coffee grounds I can get from it. It truly is a must-have for anyone serious about espresso – the next step up would be a commercial grade grinder.
But before I tell you to go out and buy this thing immediately, let’s take a closer look at it.
First of all, the Rancilio Rocky Doserless coffee grinder is built like a tank. It is heavy, with a die-cast housing finished in stainless steel. Without a doubt, the construction of this grinder is one of the reasons that it lasts so long. I know of people that have owned their Rancilio Rocky coffee grinder for 15 years, and it is still going strong. So although this grinder will set you back a few hundred dollars initially, when you amortize that over several years, you are getting a great return on your investment.
Adjusting was easy and intuitive. You simply depress a lever on the front while rotating the hopper (it’s a stepped grinder). It took me a few tries to dial into the ideal setting for espresso, but once I did, I was able to produce great tasting, full-bodied espresso every time. The grind was perfectly consistent and exactly as fine as I needed it to be.
After a bit more adjusting I was able to dial into the best settings for regular coffee as well – once again, generating full-bodied cups of coffee. As I have only used this machine for espresso and coffee, I can not attest to its use for french press or turkish coffee.
Regarding static, the Rancilio Rocky doserless coffee grinder does not generate nearly as much static as other grinders in this price range and below (which can be source of huge annoyance for some people). But also be aware that static is also a function of the coffee beans you use as well. If you notice a huge problem with coffee going everywhere when you lift up the lid, try different beans.
Also on the annoyance rating scale, the Rancilio Rocky coffee grinder is actually not that loud. It is probably one of the quietest burr grinders I have used. And I have used quite a few.
Now it does have a few quirks, which I will mention here.
Sometimes coffee beans can get stuck in the screw holes inside the hopper. While this is not a huge problem, you may need to turn it upside down to whack them out of there every now and then. Also, coffee grounds do have a tendency to spill out of your portafilter when filling it, which means a little bit of clean-up after use. Making small adjustments in your technique can alleviate this significantly, but it is something to be aware of. Mind you none of these things are huge concerns, and in no way affect the quality of the coffee grounds.
What Other Think Of The Rancilio Rocky Doserless Coffee Grinder
Generally owners of the Rancilio Rocky Doserless Coffee Grinder have great things to say about its useability and quality, and would highly recommend it to anyone serious about their coffee/espresso. Probably the biggest thing that came up was the consistency in its grind. Everyone seemed to agree that it produces top quality coffee grinds that were consistent every time.
The next thing that came up was its construction and durability. Although at least one reviewer received a defective unit right out of the box (which was replaced under Rancilio’s 1 year warranty), most people have highlighted how it still generates great quality coffee grinds even years later.
In terms of negative qualities, some customers (like me) were annoyed by coffee beans sometimes getting caught in the hopper. Another person mentioned that it does not quite produce the correct grind for French press (which requires a very coarse grind setting). So if you intend on using the Rancilio Rocky coffee grinder for French press, you will probably be disappointed with the grind.
“This thing, as others have noted, is built like a tank. It’s very quiet. It took me all of four shots to dial in the perfect grind for an everage day, and it’s a snap to go one click or one click down if the weather gets drier or more humid” D. Earls, Amazon.com
“…it’s worth it! This is a SOLID machine that has a commercial feel. All the experts recommend spending at least as much on your grinder as you do on your espresso maker. Considering most $300 espresso grinders are not that great, the Rocky is actually a money-saving investment.” D. MacLellan, Amazon.com
“I have had my Rocky doserless grinder for nearly nine months and I have never regretted the purchase. This is one of the premier prosumer grade coffee grinders and delivers consistent quality for espresso through drip and (almost) up to press pot.” Anthon Dutton, Amazon.com
- Consistent grind, produces excellent quality espresso and coffee
- Heavy duty design, built to last a very long time
- Does not generate much static
- A bit quieter than other burr coffee grinders
- Although it is a great long-term investment, it can be a bit expensive for some people
- Not the best grinder for French Press
- Sometimes coffee beans can get stuck in hopper
The Rancilio Rocky Doserless Coffee Grinder is unsurpassed by any other coffee grinders in this price range. No other grinder provides the same quality of espresso or coffee, and most are not built as solidly as this one. If you’re serious about your coffee, and want to take things to the next level, than the Rancilio Rocky is the obvious choice – unless you need something for French Press.
The Rancilio Rocky coffee grinder comes both with and without a doser. For home use I would strongly urge you to go with the doserless version, as you don’t need to store coffee in a doser before use. Leftover coffee in a doser will start to get stale after 10 minutes. Avoid this problem by grinding coffee right into your portafilter with a doserless model.
