Summary: The Hamilton Beach Scoop coffee maker is a single serve coffee maker that doesn’t require pods or capsules.
Introduction:I was introduced to the Hamilton Beach Single Serve Scoop Coffee Maker by a friend of mine a few weeks ago. She had been raving about it since getting it for Christmas and insisted that I check it out.
But before checking it out in person, I did my usual preliminary research. I found that Amazon was selling the Hamilton Beach Single cup coffee maker for $70, which is very cheap for a single serve coffee maker. So I didn’t have high hopes for this machine, despite it receiving general positive reviews on Amazon.
What follows is a personal Hamilton Beach Single Serve Coffee maker review, including my thoughts on this machine, close-up photos, and customer reviews. If you’re thinking of buying this machine, at the end of the article I provide information on how to save 20% and get it shipped to your door for free.
- Stainless steel construction
- Brews 14oz of coffee in 90 seconds
- hotter brewing temperature than other single-serve machines
- two metal scoops which double as coffee filters
Making Coffee On The Hamilton Beach Single Serve Coffee Maker
Making coffee on the Hamilton Beach Single Serve Scoop coffee maker is so easy, I’m surprised it hasn’t been embraced by other companies. Basically, you are given a large scoop, which you fill with your own coffee grounds. Then you open up the machine, put the scoop in, close up the machine, and press either “regular” or “bold”.
Immediately the machine kicks into action, with a stream of coffee pouring into your cup within a few seconds.
The whole process takes about a minute, and while the coffee is brewing, you can really smell the aroma emanating from your cup. This is a good sign, as it suggests the coffee is being brewed at the right temperature, and that the resulting cup will be full-tasting.
I had set the machine on the “bold” setting, so I was particularly eager to see how the coffee tasted. I’m happy to report that the coffee was actually quite good, and was about on par with some of my local coffee shops. It wasn’t as good as my Technivorm Moccamaster at home, but it was pretty good (mind you, the Technivorm is also several hundred dollars more!)
What I Liked About the Machine
Probably the key feature with this machine, is that it allows you to use your own coffee. If you’re a “regular” coffee type of person, this is perfect, because you can grind your own coffee fresh, and produce a great cup of coffee.
Other single-serve coffee makers on the market force you to buy pods or capsules (such as the Tassimo or the Keurig systems). While the pods are not overly expensive, they are not as cheap as using your own coffee grounds (either freshly ground or not).
Mind you, with this machine you can’t make specialty coffee.
The Hamilton Beach Single Serve Scoop coffee maker is made out of stainless steel, which suggests an above average build quality and good durability. And so far, this Hamilton Beach coffee maker has received praise from consumers for actually lasting longer than similar plastic machines.
When you consider that this machine only costs $70, it is surprising this machine performs so well and lasts so long.
- Brews coffee at a higher temperature than most home coffee makers
- No pods or capsules necessary (can use freshly ground coffee)
- Great tasting coffee
- Stainless steel construction
- Not as versatile as other single-serve coffee makers (makes only regular coffee)
- Plastic taste lingers for a few days after buying it
Other Hamilton Beach Single Serve Coffee Maker Reviews:
Just before writing this article, I did a quick search for other reviews of this machine. Most people were generally positive about this machine, and liked that they weren’t limited to using pods. And for the most part, I didn’t come across any reviews that claimed the machine broke down or stopped working after a while, which is a good sign.
I’ve included some excerpts below:
I finally brought one home and I'm sold! Using the "bold" setting it made even a decaf coffee nice and strong and it reminded me of the results that I get with my French Press - full bodied, rich & flavorful.-NWMom, Amazon.com
My HB One-Scoop feels sturdy, doesn't take up much counter space, was reasonably priced and, best of all, makes a great cup of coffee. It took a few tries for me to determine how fine to grind my beans and how much of it to use, but after that, it's been a breeze.-John Yo, Amazon.com
While it does have several inconveniences, like having to refill the water reservoir each time you want a cup of coffee, bottom line is it makes the best cup of coffee for a single serve coffee maker that I've ever tasted!-Sharon Herring, Walton Beach, FL
Although it is not as versatile as other single-serve coffee machines (it can’t make lattes or other specialty beverages), it does one thing and does it well. It produces some of the best regular coffee I’ve ever tried from a single-serve coffee maker, and is highly recommended for people that want to use freshly ground coffee.
With a price tag of around $70, this machine provides great bang for your buck, and is half the price of most other single-cup coffee makers.
