I’ll be the first to admit it: I’m a FANATIC when it comes to coffee. When it comes to making coffee in the comfort of my home, everything needs to be absolutely perfect, from the coffee grind to the coffee maker.
Although there are several excellent coffee makers on the market, the one that I use to achieve great coffee is the Technivorm Moccamaster KBT-741. So far I have been unable to find any home coffee makers that offer better tasting coffee, which is why I would recommend it to anyone that takes their coffee seriously.
However, I will admit that this Technivorm Moccamaster coffee maker is not for everyone. Although it features a fantastic design and unparalleled brewing capabilities, there are some things about this machine some people may not like.
So, to clear up any confusion on this premium coffee maker, I decided to put together this Technivorm Moccamaster KBT-741 review, so that you can make an informed decision should you choose to buy it. Read on to find out more!
Technivorm Moccamaster Coffee Maker Design
Most coffee experts would agree that the Technivorm Moccamaster coffee makers are some of the best on the market. It is one of only two coffee makers to receive approval from the Specialty Coffee Association of America (which says a lot about its brewing capabilities). And a closer look at the specs reveals that the manufacturer took extra care to ensure that this unit makes coffee exactly as it should be made.
The Technivorm Moccamaster KBT-174 features an aluminum housing and stainless carafe. As can be expected, this machine is extremely durable since it does not use any plastic components. I know some people that have had their Technivorm Moccamaster’s for 10+ years, so consider this machine as a long-term investment.
The stainless steel vacuum carafe does an excellent job keeping the coffee hot for a few hours. However, pouring with the carafe can be a little bit difficult. The lack of a small dimple on the lip of the carafe can make you spill coffee if you’re not careful, so just take you’re time when you pour the coffee.
You can tell you’re getting a pro-quality coffee maker when the manufacturer tells you what temperature it heats the water to. The Technivorm Moccamaster coffee maker heats water to 92 – 94 degrees Celsius (198 – 204 degrees F), which is exactly within the ideal temperature for the brewing process.
And believe me, this makes a huge difference for serious coffee drinkers! When I tasted my first cup from this machine, the coffee was very full-tasting – you could tell it extracted just the right amount of flavor from the coffee grounds.
A closer inspection at the machine’s design revealed why the water was the correct temperature throughout the whole brewing process: an outer plastic tube delivers hot water from the heat chamber, thus separating it from unheated water in the water chamber.
The Technivorm Moccamaster Brewing Process
Ironically, the Technivorm Moccamaster KBT-741’s best feature can also be its biggest turn-off for some people. This is not some simple programmable coffee maker that automatically makes coffee at the push of a button. Instead, you have to take a little bit of care making your coffee – and believe me, the payoff is huge.
For instance, there are three switches for the filter: closed, partial flow, or full flow. These determine how long the coffee seeps for, and how quickly it drips into the carafe. Ideally, I will let the coffee seep for a full two minutes before allowing it to flow into the carafe, to ensure I extract as much flavor as possible.
Now, the brewing process might take a bit of tweaking to get “the best cup” depending on how fine your coffee grinds are and how much coffee you intend on brewing at a time. Once you have dialed into the ideal setting, though, brewing coffee is fantastic, and takes no more than 5 minutes.
Now I can understand how this feature would be a turn-off for people that are used to just pushing a button and letting the machine do the work. But if you really want the best coffee possible, than you really need to get a machine like the Technivorm Moccamaster KBT-741. Brewing coffee is like a science; but it is rewarding once you spend just a little bit of time getting to know your machine.
Negatives with the Technivorm Moccamaster KBT-741
Now as a critical reviewer, I had to include some negatives in this Technivorm Moccamaster review. As you can see though, these negatives are very minor:
- pouring coffee from the carafe can be erratic if not done with care
- instruction manual very sparse on content
- more expensive than most home coffee makers
In the end, the Technivorm Moccamaster coffee maker is for individuals that want premium coffee brewed in their own homes for years to come. Although, this coffee maker is a bit on the pricey side (retails for $336), when you consider its design, the coffee quality, and how long it will last, the price is justified.
If you’re serious about coffee, than it is pretty much a necessity to invest in a premium machine. Although there are several great coffee machines on the market, I would recommend the Technivorm Moccamaster KBT-741 due to its unparalleled design and brewing capabilities. Once you have coffee from this machine, you won’t be able to drink cheap coffee again!
