My DeLonghi Kmix Espresso Maker Review
The first thing that stands out about the DeLonghi Kmix espresso machine, is its stunning appearance. This machine will really stand out and attract attention from guests due to its stainless steel exterior and bright color.
It is sleek, sophisticated, though surprisingly subdued.
It is a pump-driven espresso machine that produces 15 bars of pressure, which is more than enough to produce a full-bodied shot of espresso. Most of the machine’s components are made out of stainless steel, including the portafilter holder and steam wand (two items company’s often skimp on).
The only thing that wasn’t stainless steel was the water boiler, which was made out of plastic. But as long as you don’t leave water sitting in it for extended periods of time, this isn’t a huge issue at all.
There is no doubt in my mind that this machine will last a long time if you take care of it properly.
The Delonghi Kmix espresso maker is semi-automatic, which means that most of the espresso making process is automated. You still have to control the milk frothing process and how long you brew your shot.
In my opinion, these are the best kind of machines for people who have higher standards in what they drink, but who don’t want to be bothered with the technical side of making espresso.
To make espresso, you use the provided scoop to put a dose of coffee grounds in the portafilter. Then you turn the spoon over to tamp the coffee (the spoon doubles as a tamper). Finally, you slip the filter holder into the machine, press a button, and voila! Within seconds espresso begins pouring into your cup. When you have reached the desirable extraction time (around 24 second), press the button again to stop the machine.
Using the frother for this machine is just as easy. For those of you out there worried about screwing up the frothing process, you have absolutely nothing to worry about with the DeLonghi Kmix espresso machine! The machine has a panarello steam wand, which sucks air into the milk for you. All you have to do is literally submerge the steam wand in the milk, turn the steam nob, and the machine will both steam and froth the milk for you.
Assessing Beverage Quality
Well, the espresso this machine produces is actually quite good. It is brewed at the right temperature and features a layer of crema on it. The espresso tastes full-bodied enough to appease most casual users. However, it is still not good as the espresso you would get on something like the Rancilio Silvia (mind you, that machine is twice the price and way harder to operate).
The milk this machine produces is also quite good. The steam wand generates lots of foam, which can be great if you’re a fan of cappuccinos. However, you do have to work it a bit, to get rid of the bigger bubbles and enhance its silkiness. This can be accomplished by banging the bottom of the pitcher on the table and gently swirling the milk around.
In the end, this machine can produce great specialty beverages. If you plan on using this machine to exclusively make espresso, I probably wouldn’t recommend it, as there are better options out there. But if lattes or cappuccinos are your thing, that the DeLonghi Kmix espresso machine is the one you want.
Although this machine is quite good at what it does, there are a few minor drawbacks I figured I’d draw attention to in this DeLonghi Kmix espresso maker review.
The first one you have to be careful when removing the filter holder from the espresso machine after brewing a shot. You can get a soupy mess of espresso everywhere if you’re not careful (e.g. you tilt it over too much).
The second is that there isn’t a ton of space for large milk frothing pitchers – they just won’t fit between the steam wand and the bottom of the machine/table. So if you plan on making bulk amounts of beverages, you will probably have to do them one or two at a time.
Finally, the machine’s frothing aid can be a bit of an annoyance for some people – especially if you’re used to frothing milk the traditional way. You can pretty much forget about producing any latte art with this machine, as the steam wand maximizes quantity and easiness over quality.
What Others Think of the DeLonghi Kmix Espresso Maker
Before putting together this DeLonghi Kmix espresso machine review, I did a bit of research to see what others thought about this machine. Although I realize this machine is still fairly new, I didn’t actually come across any negative customer experiences.
What follows are some excerpts from a few DeLonghi Kmix espresso maker reviews:
“It makes a great cup of espresso with nice crema. I can even froth for cappuccino with this one, which has been a challenge before. It is like a mini commercial machine.” Kathleen Quinn. Rockville, MD.
“It’s really worth it to invest the money and have a great compact espresso maker. The fun colors makes it an appealing object in your kitchen! We chose the sunny yellow one!” Jennifer, Amazon.com
“This one works and looks great! Heats up quickly – coffee drink can be made within 3 min.” M. Gudzis. Boston, MA.
- High quality craftsmanship, solid design, and stainless steel components
- produces better espresso than other machines in this price range
- extremely easy to froth milk
- Quick to learn and easy to use
- Must be careful to avoid mess when removing filter holder
- frothing aid on steam wand can be a drawback for some people
The DeLonghi Kmix espresso maker will not only look great in your kitchen, it will produce pretty good specialty beverages as well. Although it cannot attain the higher quality espresso achieved on more expensive machines, it probably produces the best espresso in its price.
This machine is ideal for people looking for good quality coffee, without having to spend several months learning how to make espresso and froth milk traditionally.
