My Rancilio Silvia Espresso Machine Review

The Rancilio Silvia espresso maker is easily the best in its class, and highly recommended for home baristas serious about the espresso they make.

The first thing I’d like to state right off the bat is that this machine is built like a tank. All of its components are made from stainless steel and brass and the quality of construction is simply unparalled by other machines in this price range. You will get years (even decades) worth of use out of this machine if you take care of it well. I even know  people that have owned this machine for 5+ years completely problem free.

But as with any premium espresso maker, there is a bit of a learning curve associated with generating the ‘best’ espresso shots. You are going to have to play around with grind consistency, tamping pressure, and machine temperature (more on that later) to get an ideal shot. But once you have learned how to use this machine, you will achieve unbelievable shots of espresso almost every time.

The Rancilio Silvia Espresso Maker features a commercial-grade portafilter which is made out of chrome plated brass and weighs in at 1.5 pounds. It comes with two filter basket, one for single shots and one for double shots, both measuring 58mm in diameter. Although the filter baskets were designed for grind coffee, you can also use E.S.E. (easy serving espresso) pods with the purchase of a Rancilio Pod Adapter kit.

Now there is a great little feature that Rancilio included on this machine that you don`t usually see on home espresso makers: a 3-way solenoid valve. What this does is it relieves steam pressure built up in the machine after you brew a shot of espresso. This allows you to remove the portafilter from the machine right away, and dispose of a solid disk of expended coffee grounds rather than a soupy mess. It also ensures you don`t get coffee everywhere upon removing the portafilter!

Something I really like about this machine is that Rancilio did not integrate a frothing aid on the steam wand – unlike other home espresso makers. I absolutely HATE frothing aids as they usually cannot allow you to achieve an ideal microfoam for your cappuccinos. Having worked as a barista for a number of years, I appreciate the art in generating super creamy microfoam the traditional way – with a single nozzle steam wand.

Now unfortunately, the Rancilio Silvia Espresso Machine must warm up for quite a while before you brew a shot of espresso – sometimes around 30 – 40 minutes. This is because all of its cold brass components (portafilter and boiler) need time to get to the proper temperature. However, I did stumble across a rather ingenious cheat for the Rancilio Silvia to cut down this wait time drastically to around 6 or 7 minutes.

Another finicky detail about this machine (also regarding temperature) is that the Rancilio Silvia has a rather annoying tendency to fluctuate temperatures while it`s on. There are certain ways around this (temperature surfing) but it can be frustrating sometimes because if you brew a shot when the temperature is too low the resulting espresso shut is mediocre.

There are two ways around this: (1) invest in a PID display so you know what the temperature in the machine is (2) learn how to temperature surf so you know when the machine reaches the ideal temperature. The good thing is, there are lots of online instructions and youtube videos on how to temperature surf with the Rancilio Silvia, thus taking the guesswork out of this process.

What Others Think About the Rancilio Silvia Espresso Maker

Before writing this article, I looked around quite extensively at other Rancilio Silvia Espresso Machine reviews, to find out what others thought about this machine. Unsurprisingly, most people praised this machine for its solid design and premium espresso brewing capabilities. The issues over temperature surfing did come up a number of times, but most reviews seemed to view it as a minor quirk rather than a major problem. After all, once you know how to tap into the ideal temperature, it no longer presents much of a problem.

Surprisingly, I did not see any instance of customers having major issues with this machine. Any issues were easily resolved through Rancilio customer service or through online resources.

And I’d also like to point out in this Rancilio Silvia espresso machine review that there are so many parts available for this machine online that if anything does go wrong it is super easy to find a replacement part.
